Malika Sadani on building The Moms Co.
In a conversation with Malika Sadani, we understand what it takes to build a customer centric organization focused on young mothers and their evolving needs.
Entrepreneurship is the result of a keen desire to introduce an effective alternative to the solutions available in the market, solving a certain problem in a manner it is not being currently solved. Once we set out on this enterprising path, diligence helps us stay focused on the objective. As an uncompromising parent who wanted only the best for her child, Malika realized the severe dearth of non-toxic products catering to expecting and young mothers. An engineer and an MBA, Malika had started her career as a banker. However, a compelling need to solve this problem sparked the creation of The Moms Co.
As an Army kid, Malika’s childhood offered diverse experiences while being raised across the country. From growing up across the plentiful Delhi neighborhoods to the remote villages of Gangtok, there was a lot to experience. “Each city was different, be it its culture, climatic conditions, beliefs followed or even the local food. But what I learned was to not be perplexed by the change but to adapt the change and learn from everyone I met.” Her team lives this learning by taking all disruptions in its stride, and keeping up with the times.
It is interesting to note how a paper boat and a boulder would offer different reactions to ripples in the water. The pretty boat, intricate in its being, rides the waves lending weight to each one thrown at it. The boulder by the bank, on the other hand, stays serene and stands strong despite the ripples and the rain. It acknowledges change by being wetter than it was, yet refuses to yield. It remains the same in element. Taking a leaf out of Malika’s book, it offers structure to the chaos.
Malika draws strength from her passion towards work, and a clear sense of direction. This enables her to build a culture of constant learning, and makes her desire the necessary chaos and structure it, thus taming the storm. By empowering each of her team members, she instils a sense of responsibility and ownership, inspiring them to work towards the common organizational goal.
Efficient and organized, she is a doting mother to her daughters and her day twirls around their schedule. “Being a Mom has been the most immersive experience of my life.” While taking care that she gives them enough time in the morning and in the evening, Malika works throughout the day and squeezes in some before bed.
Empathy plays a crucial role in ensuring she does her job well. Malika speaks to at least ten of her patrons every day as a part of the feedback loop. Being a good listener has set The Moms Co. on a high growth path, leading to product development that caters to real needs and requirements of her target audience. The amount of effort invested in paying attention to what her patrons are saying is commendable.
Malika has given it all to build a community, and the community is generously giving back. For being a part of a mother’s intimate journey, The Moms Co. receives heartwarming communication from young parents highlighting the nature of impact. It helps them grow through word of mouth, and underlines the need to be experts at every vertical they own. Malika has invested in specialists from across the globe, which has helped build trust on the quality of products being marketed. A solid reputation of high quality is an essential intangible, which The Moms Co. thoroughly enjoys.
Since the last six months, Malika has been helping young mothers make a safe and non toxic journey through motherhood and beyond. The organization has achieved formidable competence in the sector they function. This could be because Malika encourages questioning the perceived obvious, perhaps inspired by the never ending curiosity of her daughters. As our conversation veers towards discussing her success, her humility is heartening. “We have just started our journey. There is so much more to do, so many more moms to reach.”
